In the Ponseti method, the foot is corrected with manipulation, casting and tenotomy and the corrected foot is maintained in that position with long term bracing to prevent recurrence, whereas in the surgical method the bones and tissues are damaged to attain the correction. The bones even after breaking grow normally whereas the tissues do not grow in the same speed as bones. Thus the surgically corrected foot results in a stiff foot which is not flexible. Once the foot is inflexible, children cannot wear normal shoes. Studies show that the children who have undergone Ponseti method do not have pain or any complications, whereas the children who have undergone surgery always suffer pain and stiffness in the ankle and foot. There are instances where the foot is amputated after severe pain and complication as a result of multiple surgeries.
