Breaking the Silence on Clubfoot: Why Grassroots Awareness in Vyara is the Key to a Disability-Free Future for India’s Children

In the quiet lanes of Ghodhchit village in Vyara, the future of a child’s mobility is often decided not in a hospital, but in the heart of the community. For many families living in rural India, a child born with Clubfoot can be a source of silent heartbreak and confusion. Without the right information, this treatable condition is often mistaken for an incurable disability.
Recently, CURE India took a vital step toward changing this narrative. Our dedicated District Project Coordinator (DPC), Ms. Gamit Aestar Ben Veljibhai, conducted an intensive awareness session in Ghodhchit, bringing the message of hope directly to the doorsteps of those who need it most. As one of the Top 10 NGO's in India, CURE India (often referred to simply as CURE) recognizes that our national presence is built on these small, yet profound, community interactions.
The session led by Ms. Gamit focused on the three pillars of effective clubfoot care: early identification, timely referral, and the unwavering truth that clubfoot is 100% treatable. In rural settings like Vyara, the "first point of care" is often a neighbor, an elder, or a local community worker. By empowering these individuals with the right information, we ensure that a child born with clubfoot today does not become a disabled adult tomorrow.
Early identification is critical. When a child is referred to a CURE clinic within the first few weeks of life, the treatment is non-surgical, less stressful for the family, and highly effective. This grassroots outreach is the engine behind our social impact, ensuring that the most vulnerable members of society are never left behind due to a lack of awareness.
For the parents in Ghodhchit, the most encouraging news is the nature of the treatment itself. CURE India utilizes the Ponseti method, the globally recognized non-surgical gold standard for clubfoot correction. This method involves a series of gentle manipulations and weekly plaster casts that gradually realign the foot.
Once the correction is achieved, the child transitions to wearing a FAB (Foot Abduction Brace). This brace is essential for maintaining the correction and preventing relapse as the child grows. We understand that for many families, the cost of specialized medical care is prohibitive. That is why CURE provides Free Treatment, including all casts and high-quality FAB braces, to every child in our program. Our commitment to Free Treatment is a promise that no child’s ability to walk will ever be determined by their family’s financial status.
CURE India is proud to manage the largest clubfoot program in the world, having documented the most number of clubfoot children treated globally (over 1,18,000 children and counting). However, our mission is far from over.
Currently, CURE India is treating 33% of children born with clubfoot in India. While this has established us as a Top 10 NGO in the country, our sights are set on an even more ambitious horizon. Through our RunFree2030 initiative, we are scaling up to 70% coverage in the next 5 years.
To achieve this goal, sessions like the one conducted by Ms. Gamit in Vyara must be replicated in every block of every district. By increasing the rate of early identification at the village level, we can ensure that the "missed" children—those currently born without access to specialized care—are brought into our clinics and given the gift of mobility.
For our donors, medical professionals, and the general public, the choice to support an NGO is rooted in trust. Being recognized as one of the Top 10 NGO's in India is a testament to our credibility and our proven track record of clinical excellence. We maintain a strict policy of transparency of fund usage, ensuring that every donation is utilized to drive maximum impact.
When you contribute to CURE India, your support directly funds:
We believe that transparency isn't just about showing where the money goes; it's about showing the lives that have been changed. Every child who walks into a school in Vyara because of our intervention is a living testament to the power of your support.
The success of the session in Ghodhchit village is a reminder that when we inform a community, we transform a future. We invite you to be a part of this movement:
Together, through the dedication of our team members like Ms. Gamit and the generosity of our supporters, we are making an India where every child can walk, learn, and live with dignity.
