The Ponseti Revolution: How Dr. Mathew Varghese is Healing Clubfoot Without Extensive Surgery

In the world of pediatric orthopedics, few names carry as much weight as Dr. Mathew Varghese, the Medical Director at CURE India. With a career defined by compassion and clinical excellence, Dr. Varghese has revolutionized how we approach one of the most common congenital physical disabilities in the country: Clubfoot.

In our latest insightful video, Dr. Varghese shares the wisdom gained from a career spanning over 8,000 tenotomies. His message is clear, powerful, and life-changing: Most children born with clubfoot do not need extensive surgery.

The Science of the Ponseti Method

For decades, many believed that severe clubfoot required invasive surgical intervention. However, the Ponseti method has turned that narrative on its head. This "functional" approach relies on the natural elasticity of a child’s ligaments and bones.

The process, as Dr. Varghese explains, follows a precise, three-step journey:

  1. Manipulation: Gently stretching the foot into the correct position.
  2. Serial Casting: Applying a series of plaster casts every week to gradually hold and progress the correction.
  3. Tenotomy: A minor, percutaneous procedure to release the Achilles tendon—a step Dr. Varghese has perfected over thousands of cases to ensure full range of motion.

When performed correctly and on time, this method achieves a success rate of nearly 100%, allowing children to lead healthy, active lives without the scarring or stiffness often associated with traditional surgery.
