A Birthday Tribute to a National Icon: How Dr. Mathew Varghese is Turning the Dream of a Clubfoot-Free India into a Reality.

Today, the CURE India family across the country pauses to celebrate more than just a birthday. We celebrate the life, the vision, and the relentless compassion of our Medical Director, Dr. Mathew Varghese.
In the corridors of hospitals and the quiet wards of rural clinics, Dr. Mathew is a name synonymous with hope. For thousands of families, he is the reason their children can now walk, run, and dream without the physical limitations of clubfoot. As we honor him today, we also reflect on the extraordinary impact of his leadership, which has helped shape a localized medical initiative into a powerful national movement.
Dr. Mathew Varghese’s contribution to the medical field is nothing short of revolutionary. As a staunch advocate of the Ponseti method, he has spent decades proving that surgery is rarely the answer for clubfoot. His approach—defined by precision, patience, and a deep understanding of pediatric orthopedics—has set a global benchmark.
With a record of over 8,000 tenotomies and countless successful corrections, Dr. Mathew’s hands have literally reshaped the futures of thousands. But his impact goes beyond the operating theater. He has been a mentor to hundreds of medical professionals, passing on the "Ponseti gold standard" and ensuring that his expertise is multiplied across every state in India.
"Dr. Mathew, your unwavering dedication and clinical excellence have shaped not just a program, but a national movement towards a Clubfoot-Free India. Your leadership continues to inspire every member of the CURE India family to strive for impact with integrity and compassion. It is an honour to walk this journey with you." — Dr. Santhosh George, Founder/Director, CURE India
Under the medical guidance of Dr. Varghese, CURE India has grown to become the largest clubfoot program in the world. Today, we are recognized as one of the Top 10 NGO’s in India, a distinction built on the twin pillars of credibility and transparency of fund usage.
Dr. Mathew’s vision is a cornerstone of our RunFree2030 mission. Currently, our program is proud to be treating 33% of children born with clubfoot in India. However, with Dr. Mathew leading the way, we are aggressively scaling our efforts to reach 70% of children in the next five years.
Our commitment to the community remains steadfast:
Dr. Mathew often reminds us that a "straight foot" is only the beginning. The true goal is social impact—ensuring that every child can enter a classroom, play on a playground, and eventually contribute to the workforce with dignity. His work is a testament to the fact that when clinical excellence meets deep empathy, the results are life-changing.
For the general public and our dedicated donors, Dr. Mathew’s leadership provides the ultimate assurance that every contribution is used to create measurable, lasting change. We are not just fixing feet; we are restoring entire lives.
The best way to celebrate Dr. Mathew Varghese’s birthday is to join the movement he has so passionately built.
Today, we salute the "CURE Champion" who leads us with integrity. Happy Birthday, Dr. Mathew Varghese. Thank you for making hope walk.
