Stepping Into the Heart of Kanpur: CURE India’s Grassroots Mission to End Clubfoot Disability

In the bustling industrial landscape of Kanpur, where progress is measured by movement and energy, thousands of children are born with a condition that threatens to keep them on the sidelines of life. Clubfoot, a birth deformity where the feet turn inward and downward, is a silent crisis for many families in Uttar Pradesh. However, it is a crisis with a cure.

Recently, CURE India took its mission to the narrow lanes and vibrant communities of Kanpur. Our dedicated District Project Coordinator (DPC), Ms. Beena, conducted a series of strategic awareness visits to ensure that the message of hope reaches the "first point of care." By engaging with local leaders like Ms. Renu Agnihotri at the Kakadev M Block Anganwadi Centre and Ms. Pratibha Pandey at the Jayprakash Nagar Basti centre, CURE India is weaving a safety net of early identification that changes lives before a child even takes their first step.

The Power of the Anganwadi: The Community’s First Line of Defense

Why does a Top 10 NGO in the country spend its time in local Anganwadi centres? The answer is simple: these educators and workers are the true guardians of child health in India. They are the first people a mother turns to for guidance and the first to notice if a newborn's feet are not positioned correctly.

During these sessions in Kanpur, Ms. Beena focused on empowering these teachers with the knowledge to act. The sessions emphasized that clubfoot is not a permanent disability or a curse—it is a medical condition that is completely treatable when addressed early. By strengthening the referral chain from the Anganwadi to a certified treatment centre, we ensure that the most vulnerable children in Kanpur Nagar receive Free Treatment before their bones harden and surgery becomes the only, more difficult option.

The Gold Standard: The Ponseti Method and FAB

For the parents we meet in places like Jayprakash Nagar, the fear of expensive surgeries often keeps them from seeking help. CURE India (or simply CURE) removes that fear entirely. We utilize the Ponseti method, the globally recognized non-surgical gold standard for clubfoot correction.

This process involves a series of gentle manipulations and weekly plaster casts that gradually move the foot into its natural, functional position. Following the casting phase, children are fitted with a specialized FAB (Foot Abduction Brace). This brace is essential; it ensures that the correction is maintained as the child grows, preventing a relapse. Because of our commitment to social impact, CURE provides these high-quality braces and all clinical supplies at no cost to the family.

RunFree2030: Our Vision for a Disability-Free India

CURE India is proud to manage the largest clubfoot program in the world, having documented the most number of clubfoot children treated globally (over 1,18,000 to date). However, our national presence brings with it a significant responsibility.

Currently, CURE India is treating 33% of children born with clubfoot in India. While this achievement has cemented our status as one of the Top 10 NGO's in India, it also means that 67% of children are still waiting for help. Our RunFree2030 initiative is our roadmap to change this reality. We are scaling up to 70% coverage across the country in the next 5 years.

To reach this 70% goal, visits like the one Ms. Beena conducted in Kanpur are vital. By saturating every district with awareness, we can find the children who are currently "missed" and give them the gift of mobility.

Trust, Credibility, and Transparency

As a donor or a member of the general public, you want to know that your contribution makes a measurable difference. Being recognized as a Top 10 NGO in the country is a testament to our credibility. We understand that for our medical professionals and partners, the integrity of the program is paramount.

We maintain a strict policy of transparency of fund usage. When you make a donation to CURE India, your money goes directly toward:

  • Manufacturing and distributing FAB braces for children in need.
  • Procuring medical-grade plaster and bandages for our national network of clinics.
  • Training frontline coordinators and healthcare workers to identify clubfoot at the grassroots level.

How You Can Join the Movement

The work in Kanpur is a reminder that when a community is informed, a child is healed. We invite you to be a part of the RunFree2030 mission:

  1. Donation: Your financial support is the lifeblood of our "Free Treatment" model. Every rupee brings us closer to ensuring that 70% of India’s children with clubfoot are walking by 2030. Donate to CURE India.
  2. Volunteer: We ask people to volunteer their time. Whether it’s helping us map new communities or assisting in awareness drives in your own city, your participation adds weight to our mission.
  3. Advocate: Knowledge is power. Share this story and help the world understand that clubfoot is treatable.

Together, through the dedication of our team members like Ms. Beena and the cooperation of leaders like Ms. Renu and Ms. Pratibha, we are making an India where every child can walk, learn, and live with dignity. Let’s make the next generation of Kanpur—and all of India—a generation that runs free.
