Bridging the Gap in Andhra Pradesh: How Early Identification at Maternity Centers is Paving the Way for a Clubfoot-Free India

In the journey of a thousand miles, the most critical step is the very first one. For a child born with Clubfoot, that first step often depends on what happens in the maternity ward just hours after birth. Recently, CURE India took its mission to the "front lines" of infant health in Andhra Pradesh, conducting a vital awareness session at Maternity Centres Hospital in Kotha Kakinada.
Led by our dedicated District Program Coordinator (DPC), Ms. S. Kiran Roy, this initiative focused on a singular, powerful truth: clubfoot is completely treatable, and the key to a lifetime of mobility lies in early identification. As one of the Top 10 NGO's in India, CURE India (often referred to as CURE) is committed to ensuring that every healthcare provider at the first point of care is equipped to change a child’s destiny.
Maternity hospitals are the gatekeepers of a child’s physical future. When medical professionals in these centers are trained to recognize the inward-turning feet of clubfoot, they become the catalyst for a miracle. By sensitizing the team at Kotha Kakinada, Ms. S. Kiran Roy has ensured that families in the region no longer have to live in fear of a permanent disability.
The awareness session emphasized that a timely referral to a CURE clinic is the difference between a child who struggles to walk and one who runs, plays, and thrives. Through these grassroots efforts, our national presence is felt most strongly where it matters most—at the bedside of a newborn.
The core of our clinical work is the Ponseti method, a non-surgical gold standard that has transformed the lives of over 1,18,000 children in India. This treatment is gentle, effective, and relies on the natural flexibility of a newborn's ligaments.
At CURE India, we take immense pride in providing these services as Free Treatment. We believe that no child should remain disabled because their family cannot afford medical care. By removing the financial barrier, we ensure that our social impact is as inclusive as it is deep.
CURE India currently manages the largest clubfoot program in the world, having documented the most number of clubfoot children treated globally. However, our mission is driven by an urgent need to reach even more children.
Currently, CURE India is treating 33% of children born with clubfoot in India. While this achievement has earned us recognition as a Top 10 NGO in the country, thousands of children are still being missed. Our RunFree2030 initiative is our roadmap for the future: we are scaling up to 70% coverage in the next 5 years.
To reach this 70% milestone, sessions like the one in Kakinada are essential. By expanding our reach into every maternity center across India, we can ensure that no child slips through the cracks of the healthcare system.
For our donors and the general public, credibility is everything. Being ranked among the Top 10 NGO's in the country is a responsibility we uphold through absolute transparency of fund usage. We understand that every donation is an investment in a child’s future. We strive to show exactly how your contributions provide:
The work in Kakinada is a reminder that awareness is the first step toward healing. We invite you to be a part of the RunFree2030 mission:
We extend our sincere thanks to the team at Maternity Centres Hospital, Kotha Kakinada, for their support, and to Ms. S. Kiran Roy for her tireless dedication. Together, we are ensuring that in India, every child is born to run.
