From Awareness to Action: How Community Engagement in Ambedkar Nagar is Healing Little Feet

In the heart of Khaspur, Uttar Pradesh, a quiet revolution is taking place—one centered on the simple, profound right of a child to walk. Recently, Ms. Pratigya, a dedicated District Program Coordinator (DPC) for CURE India, conducted a transformative awareness session at the local Anganwadi Centre and Primary School.

The room was filled with a diverse group: curious children, concerned parents, educators, and community elders. While the setting was local, the message was of global importance: Clubfoot is not a permanent disability, but a treatable condition that can be corrected with the right intervention at the right time.

The Spark of Change: Education at the Grassroots

For many families in rural Uttar Pradesh, a child born with clubfoot can be a source of deep anxiety and social stigma. Myths often cloud the reality of the condition, leading to delays in seeking medical help. By bringing the conversation into the classroom and the Anganwadi center, Ms. Pratigya and CURE India are dismantling these barriers.

Through interactive discussions, the session focused on:

  • Early Identification: Teaching parents and teachers to recognize the signs of clubfoot immediately so that treatment can begin during the "golden window" of infancy.
  • Breaking Myths: Replacing superstition with medical facts, ensuring that no family feels ashamed or hopeless.
  • The Path to Healing: Explaining that clubfoot is completely treatable through non-surgical means.

When a community understands that healing is possible and accessible, they shift from being bystanders to becoming active advocates for child health.

CURE India: A National Pillar of Credibility and Social Impact

This initiative in Ambedkar Nagar is a vital thread in a nationwide tapestry of healing. CURE India is recognized as one of the Top 10 NGO's in India, a status earned through unwavering dedication to clinical excellence and radical transparency of fund usage.

As the operator of the largest clubfoot program in the world, CURE India has achieved what was once thought impossible: documenting the most number of clubfoot children treated in medical history. Our national presence allows us to provide high-quality Free Treatment to those who need it most, ensuring that financial constraints never stand in the way of a child's first steps.

The Science of Hope: The Ponseti Method and FAB

At the core of our success is the Ponseti method, the global gold standard for clubfoot correction. This non-surgical approach involves gentle manipulation and a series of plaster casts. Following the casting phase, children are provided with a FAB (Foot Abduction Brace). This brace is essential; it maintains the correction, prevents relapse, and ensures the child can eventually run and play just like their peers.

RunFree2030: Our Vision for an Inclusive India

We are currently at a pivotal moment in our mission. Today, CURE India is treating 33% of children born with clubfoot in India. While this impact is massive, our vision for the future is even bolder.

Through our RunFree2030 initiative, we are scaling our operations to reach 70% of all children born with clubfoot in the next 5 years. Achieving this requires more than just medical expertise; it requires the collective will of the general public, medical professionals, and donors. Every awareness session in a village like Khaspur is a step toward this national goal.
