Empowering the Frontline: Dhanbad’s Sahiyas Leading the Charge Against Clubfoot

In the industrial heart of Jharkhand, a different kind of strength is being forged. It isn't found in the coal mines of Dhanbad, but in the hands and hearts of the Sahiyas—the dedicated ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) workers who serve as the lifeblood of rural healthcare.

Recently, CURE India (often known simply as CURE) hosted a pivotal awareness meeting in Dhanbad, bringing together Sahiyas from 10 different blocks. This gathering was more than a training session; it was a strategic alignment of our national presence with the frontline warriors who know their communities best. As one of the Top 10 NGO’s in India, CURE India recognizes that to eliminate disability, we must first empower those who walk the last mile.

The Power of the Sahiya: Identifying Every Child

For many families in underserved communities, a child born with Clubfoot can feel like an insurmountable challenge. Without information, parents often resort to traditional myths or simply accept the disability as fate. This is where the Sahiyas play a critical role.

During the Dhanbad meeting, our team focused on:

  • Early Identification: Training Sahiyas to spot the inward-turning feet of clubfoot in newborns during their routine home visits.
  • Timely Referral: Emphasizing that the window for the most effective, non-surgical treatment is immediately after birth.
  • Access to Care: Ensuring every Sahiya knows that CURE India provides Free Treatment, removing the financial barrier that often prevents rural families from seeking help.

The Science of a Step: The Ponseti Method

The core of our medical intervention is the Ponseti method, the globally recognized gold standard for clubfoot correction. This method is highly effective and avoids the need for invasive, painful surgeries.

The treatment involves a series of gentle manipulations and plaster casts, applied weekly to gradually correct the foot's position. Following this, children are fitted with a FAB (Foot Abduction Brace) to ensure the correction is maintained as they grow. By partnering with Sahiyas, we ensure that children in Dhanbad are referred directly to our clinics to begin this life-changing journey as soon as possible.

Scaling Social Impact: The Road to 2030

Why is the Dhanbad meeting so significant? Because CURE India manages the largest clubfoot program in the world. We hold the record for the most number of clubfoot children treated globally, but our mission is far from complete.

Currently, we are proud to be treating 33% of children born with clubfoot in India. However, through our RunFree2030 initiative, we are scaling up to 70% coverage in the next 5 years. To reach those remaining 37% of children, we must strengthen our partnerships with frontline health workers in every block of every district. Every child identified by a Sahiya in Dhanbad is a victory for this national goal.

A Legacy of Credibility and Transparency

As one of the Top 10 NGO's in the country, CURE India has built its reputation on credibility and transparency of fund usage. We understand that our donors and the general public want to see their contributions translated into tangible social impact.

When you make a donation to CURE India, you are funding:

  • Frontline Training: Like the meeting in Dhanbad that reached 10 blocks of health workers.
  • Medical Supplies: The casts, bandages, and high-quality FAB braces required for treatment.
  • Clinical Excellence: Training for medical professionals to ensure the Ponseti method is implemented with precision.

We are committed to showing our supporters exactly how their generosity enables us to offer Free Treatment to the most vulnerable members of society.

How You Can Join the Movement

The work in Dhanbad reminds us that while the challenge of disability is vast, our collective resolve is stronger. We invite you to stand with the Sahiyas and CURE India in our mission toward RunFree2030.

  1. Donation: Your financial support is what allows us to keep our clinics open and our treatment free. Donate Today to Change a Life.
  2. Volunteer: We ask people to volunteer their time to help us with community mapping, awareness drives, and supporting families through their treatment journey.
  3. Advocate: Use your voice to spread the message that clubfoot is treatable. One shared post could reach a family in need.

Together, we are not just correcting feet; we are restoring the right of every child to walk with dignity, attend school, and dream of a bright future. Let’s make India a place where every step counts.
